Pizza Pie and Humpy Dumpy

Hello Folks,

Last evening my wife Beng returned from her shopping for construction material in Cebu and fortunately for me she had stopped at the market in the Ayala Mall and bought me back American food that I wanted such yogurt and yummy granola bars. And she brought home Pizza Hut pizza for this old Irishman.  After she had warmed the pizza I ate two slices which were delicious and scrumptious. This morning I received some news from my son Thomas back in the states. He emailed that he had received his new passport and he was planning to purchase his airline ticket next week. Aren’t I lucky! Wow!

Isn't this world wide food shortage something else? It sort of reminds me how bad things were after the Second World War. We school kids saved our extra money which was generally 25 cents to send to the poor starving people in China and we all chipped in to send CARE packages to Europe. Going on further first we saw the effects of global warming and everyday we see the price of oil going sky high. Now the world is experiencing global food shortage. Personally I know that the price of commercial rice here is sky high too. When I first arrived here a sack of rice cost around P-800 and now today my wife pays around P-1800 for the same sack, the same commercial rice. There is no way a person can make their peso stretch and my wife does her best.  It makes me ponder how the average family can make it on such limited funds not only here but also in other developing countries as well. Do I feel guilty as I ate my two slices of pizza? I have to answer, no. Why? We try our best to help my wife’s family and our circle of extended family whenever they need help. FYI- For those who are interested I have copied in part the following article for you to look over. My $64 question is the world like humpy dumpy? And if so, can all the kings’ men put it back again?

Chuck

"The years 2007–2008 saw dramatic world food price rises, bringing a state of crisis to some of the poorest regions in the world, and causing political instability and social unrest in several nations. Short-term causes include poor harvests in various parts of the world, especially Australia. Systemic causes for the world-wide food price increase have been currently identified as the increasing use of biofuels in developed countries and an increasing demand for a more varied diet (especially meat) across the expanding middle-class populations of Asia.  As well, the continued rise in the price of oil has heightened the costs of fertilizers, food transport, and industrial agriculture as a whole. These factors, coupled with falling world food stockpiles and instability brought about by the subprime mortgage crisis, have all contributed to the dramatic world-wide rise in food prices. Several factors contributed to the rising food price. Analysts accounted the price rises to a perfect storm of poor harvests in various parts of the world; increasing biofuel usage; lower food reserves; growing consumer demand in Asia; oil price rises, and changes to the world...."
