The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration noted the continuing decline in the demand for Filipino domestic helpers in the past two years. "Based on our assessment, the number of domestic helpers deployed overseas is still low until this time," POEA chief Rosalinda Baldoz said in an interview. Official data for the year 2008 is not yet available but POEA records showed that hiring of domestic helpers dropped by almost 50 percent from 91,412 in 2006 to only 47,877 in 2007. Baldoz noted that deployment of domestic helpers started to plunge when the government enforced in 2006 a new policy setting the monthly minimum wage of Filipino domestic helpers to $400.
