GOOD NEWS - Guam needs up to 30,000 construction workers

The local recruitment industry reported today that Guam is set to hire between 20,000 to 30,000 construction workers who would get a monthly pay of $750 or more. All foreign workers, including Filipinos, who will enter Guam under the H-2b work visa will be issued special "Guam only" work visa. It means they will not be allowed to travel to Hawaii or the US mainland after their work visa expires on Dec. 31, 2014 as provided under the special legislation passed by the US Senate now awaiting President Bush's signature. Decline in the demand for Filipino domestic helpers

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration noted the continuing decline in the demand for Filipino domestic helpers in the past two years. "Based on our assessment, the number of domestic helpers deployed overseas is still low until this time," POEA chief Rosalinda Baldoz said in an interview. Official data for the year 2008 is not yet available but POEA records showed that hiring of domestic helpers dropped by almost 50 percent from 91,412 in 2006 to only 47,877 in 2007. Baldoz noted that deployment of domestic helpers started to plunge when the government enforced in 2006 a new policy setting the monthly minimum wage of Filipino domestic helpers to $400.
